Feeling stuck? – How to stay committed to learning

Feeling blank when trying to remember German words? We have all been there!

Learning a language can be challenging and it requires commitment from you over an extended period of time.

There will be a time where you will feel stuck and not make any progress. You may have been trying hard and have been putting a lot of effort. Still it feels like the vocabulary is difficult to memorize and the grammar does not make sense.

Don’t be discouraged by this feeling, we have all been there. This article lists common reasons than can lead you to being stuck and will also give advice on how to resolve each of them.

You’re trying to hard.

It might be that you are not only trying hard, but trying too hard. Especially if you have tendencies to be a perfectionist, its easy to fall into the trap of expecting too much.

Even the best need a lot of repetition and the right visualization to memorize a new word. So if you feel like you do not get it after attending a lesson, come back to that lesson at a later point in time.

In general it may help to adopt a relaxed attitude about it. What if you just start learning and expect to have forgotten everything at the end of the lesson? You may be positively surprised if you end up still remembering little bits and pieces.

Your learning materials / classes / teacher are not right for you

Even the best teachers or books may not be right for everyone. Some people enjoy things being presented visually. Others learn well by listening to podcasts.

I personally do need to see a new vocabulary or grammar rule written down at least once and then copy it by myself. If I really want to remember it, I need to draw something visual such as a mindmap around it to connect it to other concepts.

You do not have a good enough reason to learn

What was your reason to learn the language in the first place? Go back to the moment where you decided to start learning German… Why did you want to do it?

When starting to take action on something, we often forget about our initial motivation to do it.

Bringing your reason or purpose for learning German back to your mind might motivate you to keep at it
